Mission: To Design and Develop a contemporary railings system which can be mass manufactured and is
comparable in price to a traditional wooden system
Discipline: Industrial Design Product: Fusion Outdoor Railings

The design uses aluminium extrusions, castings, injection mouldings and silicone extrusions to create a
railings system which is affordable, adaptable and extremely easy to assemble. The Interchangeable
panels and balusters give the user the opportunity to customise their system as well as giving the
design longevity as the panel style can be changed inline with trend.

The injection moulded bracket, firstly slides into the rail and then fixed into position by
tightening the grub screws.

The rails connect to the newels with high pressure dye castings which are
designed to be used at different angles.

The top wooden rail and the extruded rail are connected by
another aluminium extrusion.

The silicone finishing strip slides into the extrusion to cover fixings.

Project Outcome: Fusion Railings are stocked nationally in DIY superstores. Profit expected
by the third year of production was achieved in the first.
